These provocations aim to help us read the report with an eye to several emerging innovations in cities.\u00a0 They can also serve as discussion questions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>#1.\u00a0<strong>Do playful approaches<\/strong> to technology have different mechanisms than most \u201c<strong>Smart City<\/strong>\u201d movements and <strong>civic tech<\/strong>?\u00a0 Compared to games, civic tech often lacks frameworks to optimize engagement for satisfying choices, deliberate difficulty, and sustained uncertainty.\u00a0 Games are different, and are poorly explained as raw incentive systems. (For example, simply adding points rarely makes games fun.) The tactics in this report hint at different ways to optimize technology design for cities.<\/p>\n<p>#2.\u00a0<strong>If public space <\/strong>is<strong> a <\/strong><strong>hybrid <\/strong><strong>of physical and digital, what are the hybrid <\/strong><strong>tactics <\/strong><strong>for civic engagement?<\/strong>\u00a0 Many places can no longer be understood by the physical experience alone.\u00a0 Navigating space and discovering place is happening in new ways. But do these new ways dampen the visibility of our cultural assets in favor of utilitarian goals? Several city strategies in this report point to new ways to surface \u2013 and allocate \u2013 the cultural assets that matter for neighborhood identity.<\/p>\n<p>#3. If civic life is about<strong> networks in the public interest<\/strong>, and games come with self-organizing groups, how should we respect those networks? Should we invite player leaders to help us organize, and let them speak at public events? Do we undermine local networks when our civic <strong>invitations are only to users<\/strong> and players as individuals?<\/p>\n<p>#4. Is this <strong>augmented reality<\/strong> (AR)? <u>Yes, and yet<\/u> many of the central mechanisms may depend more on human networks, fan culture and playful challenges than augmentation.\u00a0 If you are a technologist, what does it mean for AR to augment community and be \u201cnetwork first\u201d with graphics second?<\/p>\n<p>#5. Who are the right <strong>partners<\/strong> for <strong>localism<\/strong>?\u00a0 Cities are vital in our modern world \u2013 but platforms like <em>Pok\u00e9mon GO<\/em> are often globally managed. National funders like the Knight Foundation may serve as brokers between government and entertainment firms. How can a deliberate structuring of power relations be useful for cities that seek control over their local identity and experience?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, this list can go on! The most powerful provocations are often tied to larger debates and controversies in fields from urban planning and media studies to neighborhood empowerment.
