A competition for youth to 60-second videos pitching locations to add to the game. Winners were selected by a youth-led process. A youth-centered hack-a-thon to commemorate Boston\u2019s local history in augmented reality games by Niantic. The Boston effort is one of the few explicitly analyzed in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/pokemon-report\/download\/\">detailed report<\/a>. Including a discussion of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>sharing power with Boston city officials and a commercial game company<\/li>\n<li>youth voice<\/li>\n<li>participatory design<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Sample insight: <\/em>Boston organizers discovered that youth can be highly motivated to change the community narrative and reach new audiences through Pok\u00e9mon GO. But as the report argues, technology alone cannot provide the scaffolding for marginalized youth. <strong>Local organizations turn out to be more important than ever<\/strong>, and success in Boston came by extending the local capacity of civic associations, historical societies, after-school writing programs, and more.<\/p>\n<h2>Organizers<\/h2>\n<p>The Boston initiative was led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/elab.emerson.edu\/about\">Engagement Lab<\/a> at Emerson College, with\u00a0the City of Boston through the Mayor\u2019s Office of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.gov\/departments\/new-urban-mechanics#play\">New Urban Mechanics<\/a>, City of Boston&#8217;s Office of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.gov\/departments\/resilience-and-racial-equity\">Resilience and Racial Equity<\/a>, Boston <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonpublicschools.org\/\">Public Schools<\/a>, the Boston <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bpl.org\/about-us\/\">Public Library,<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/hawthorneyouthandcommunitycenter\/\">Hawthorne<\/a> Youth and Community Center, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.826boston.org\/about\/\">826 Boston<\/a>.
