The book provides game designers with a model to strengthen existing networks tied to place and gives city leaders tools to look past technology trends in order to make a difference in the real world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>Selected Projects<\/strong>:<\/em><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">(1) <a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/ebow\/\"><strong>Engaging Beyond Our Walls (EBOW)<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"\/go\/ebow\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Hive-Mechanic-MapGraphic_R1-1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2023\" style=\"width:237px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Hive-Mechanic-MapGraphic_R1-1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Hive-Mechanic-MapGraphic_R1-1024-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Hive-Mechanic-MapGraphic_R1-1024-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>This national initiative is empowering 50+ cities and towns to <strong>make their own<\/strong> neighborhood games and stories. In 2024, we published our <a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/ebow\/recipe-book\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2998\"><strong>recipe book<\/strong><\/a> with 10+ models for local <strong>libraries<\/strong>, community <strong>museums<\/strong> and ordinary <strong>residents<\/strong>. The project investigates how we can <strong>democratize game design <\/strong>for all towns, marginalized voices, and with minimal technology. Funded by IMLS, with most creations made using our new game engine, <a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/hive-mechanic\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"847\">Hive Mechanic<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">(2) <em>Book in draft:<\/em>&nbsp;<strong>Neighborhood Storytelling System<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"240\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/storytelling-system-dc-thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-804\" style=\"width:249px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Launched in 2021 with the Smithsonian and the DC Public Library in Washington, DC, this project installed <strong>listening stations<\/strong> at the front desk of libraries with more than 700,000 visitors over two years; it brought a repurposed <strong>payphone<\/strong> on wheels to the streets; and it mobilized a <strong>multimedia truck<\/strong> for traveling exhibits. As a model, he project offers a new approach to <strong>circulating stories<\/strong> of local history and activism tied to neighborhoods. Interactive projects remixed the content into scavenger hunts and raffles tied to local business. <em>(Read more via these&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dc.storytelling.city\/2019\/10\/05\/our-model-cls19-connected-learning\/\">slides<\/a>.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">(3) <a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/pokemon-report\/\">Report: Cities Remix Pok\u00e9mon GO<\/a> <\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/pogo-map-charlotte-thumb-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-182\" style=\"width:125px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Published in 2018, this was the first large-scale investigation into how cities can appropriate and remix commercial games to advance local goals, including within &#8220;open street&#8221; festivals and with neighborhood libraries. The report provides a few hints at the <a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/pokemon-go\/future-of-cities-5-provocations\/\">future of cities<\/a> as participatory spaces, showing how playful engagement can connect disparate groups and organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">(4) <a href=\"http:\/\/gameimpact.net\">Report: &#8220;Impact&#8221; with Games<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"118\" height=\"152\" src=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/cover-fragmented-field-report1-sm2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-183\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>This report shows how we can rethink &#8220;impact&#8221; with games, and how the right language is crucial to overcome fragmentation. In partnership with Games for Change, with funding from the Packard Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Funding and collaborators (recent):<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>IMLS (Institute for Museum and Library Services), in support of our three-year work to train libraries in 50+ cities to <a href=\"\/go\/ebow\/\">Engage Beyond Our Walls<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The John S. and James L. <strong>Knight<\/strong> Foundation with <strong>Niantic<\/strong>, Inc., in support of our research on cities appropriating Pokemon GO (see the report &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/pokemon-report\/\">Cities Remix a Playful Platform<\/a>&#8220;)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Packard Foundation and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/GamesForChange.org\"><strong>Games for Change<\/strong><\/a>, in support of our work on the <a href=\"http:\/\/gameimpact.net\/reports\/fragmented-field\/\">Game Impact Project<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Smithsonian<\/strong> Women&#8217;s Committee for their support of our DC <a href=\"https:\/\/dc.storytelling.city\/\">storytelling system<\/a> for the &#8220;Right to the City&#8221; exhibit at the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/humanitiestruck.com\/about\/\">Humanities Truck<\/a>, based on a grant from&nbsp;The Henry <strong>Luce<\/strong> Foundation and Andrew W. <strong>Mellon<\/strong> Foundation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/leimertphonecompany.net\/\">Leimert Phone Company<\/a> and our experimental game <a href=\"http:\/\/sankofa.cc\/\">Sankofa Says<\/a> (featured at IndieCade)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Tools for creating place-based games: <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hivemechanic.org\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"148\" height=\"122\" src=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/hive-mechanic-thumb0b.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-893\" style=\"width:191px;height:auto\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><em>Authoring tool:<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hivemechanic.org\/\"><strong>Hive Mechanic <\/strong><\/a>is a new way to create your own city game, smart city activity, or participatory neighborhood story. It is already in dozens of cities and small towns. Hive can tap into city data, send text messages, offer branching audio stories and use real-time AI. No programming is required to make something for your city. Our goal is to help democratize design, from library maker spaces to community museums.
