For example, the report <a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/pokemon-report\/cities\/san-jose\/\">profiles San Jose<\/a>, where officials engaged 35,000 Pok\u00e9mon GO players in their open street festival.\u00a0 Players released more than $450,000 into the local economy, while celebrating local streets filled with biking, walking and play.<\/p>\n<p>Cities can also engage residents with <strong>history in physical space<\/strong>, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/pokemon-report\/cities\/philadelphia-libraries\/\">in Philadelphia<\/a>, where neighborhood libraries used Pok\u00e9mon GO to guide walking tours of famous murals, landmarks and points of pride.<\/p>\n<p><strong>City experiments <\/strong>include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Open Street events\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/pokemon-report\/cities\/san-jose\/\">in San Jose<\/a>; CA,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/pokemon-report\/cities\/charlotte\/\">in Charlotte<\/a>, NC; and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/pokemon-report\/cities\/philly-free-streets\/\">in Philadelphia<\/a>, PA<\/li>\n<li><strong>Library-based walking tours\u00a0<\/strong>based in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/pokemon-report\/cities\/philadelphia-libraries\/\">five branches of the Free Library of Philadelphia<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sharing power<\/strong> to negotiate the data layer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/pokemon-report\/cities\/boston\/\">in Boston<\/a>, MA<\/li>\n<li><em>&#8230;and more, from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/pokemon-report\/cities\/new-bedford\/\">New Bedford<\/a>, MA, to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/pokemon-report\/cities\/chester\/\">Chester<\/a>, UK, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/pokemon-report\/cities\/akron-ohio\/\">Akron<\/a>, OH<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">These experiments were often supported through a multi-year <a href=\"https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/press\/releases\/augmented-reality-games-ingress-and-pok-mon-go-focus-of-new-community-engagement-initiative-launched-by-niantic-and-knight-foundation\">partnership<\/a> between Pok\u00e9mon GO creator, <strong>Niantic<\/strong>, Inc., and the John S. and James L. <strong>Knight Foundation<\/strong>, which invests in informed and engaged communities.<\/p>\n<h2>Strategies for cities<\/h2>\n<p>For cities considering augmented reality, our research highlights five opportunities:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Adapt games for local events. <\/strong>Cities can adapt AR platforms to amplify local strengths and better reflect civic needs. In particular, cities can layer walking tours, scavenger hunts, and other activities on top of the game &#8212; adding value for existing players and integrating play with local campaigns.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Invite player networks (not just individuals).<\/strong> Pok\u00e9mon GO players often arrived in groups, including across generations and with social media networks poised for discussion. Recruiting is also easier through player and fan networks, and cities can help by tapping network leaders, beyond the usual open invitations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Focus digital activity near inviting and accessible physical spaces.<\/strong> Players often want to interact, but social mixing can happen more easily when cities position play near the right physical spaces with seating and food.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bring local culture to online platforms.<\/strong> Players can connect to global cultures through AR platforms, including the Pok\u00e9mon universe. At the same time, games can engage players with local culture, from murals to local history. In a digital age, cities should increasingly invest in the technology innovations that shape how we discover local culture.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Discussion probes<\/h2>\n<p>Our findings point to the <a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/pokemon-go\/future-of-cities-5-provocations\/\">future of cities<\/a>. Public space is increasingly hybrid, with a data layer that can be playfully engaged &#8212; including to build community.\u00a0 Players come not just as individuals, but with networks to global culture, local ties and self-organizing groups.<\/p>\n<p>To facilitate discussion around the report, we have posted a few probes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/pokemon-go\/social-mixing-through-ar\/\">Social Mixing through AR<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/pokemon-go\/open-streets-festivals-tap-into-pokemon-go\/\">Open Streets Festivals with Pok\u00e9mon GO<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/pokemon-go\/ways-to-remix-pokemon-go-physical-interventions\/\">Physical Interventions to Remix the Game<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>&#8230;more to come, see our <a href=\"https:\/\/playfulcity.net\/go\/updates\/\">updates<\/a>&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Methods<\/h2>\n<p>The analysis by American University is based on usage statistics from city events, surveys of players, and extensive interviews with city leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in mid-2017, our researchers traveled to\u00a0<strong>directly observe<\/strong> many of the city events in person. <strong>Online<\/strong> observations were just as important, including in player forums used for planning group attendance at live events and chat during the event (especially in Discord channels, where players were very welcoming). Researchers gathered hundreds of <strong>player surveys<\/strong> at the large events in San Jose and Philadelphia, and compared their quantitative data with third-party evaluations (most notably the Mineta Transportation Institute <a href=\"https:\/\/transweb.sjsu.edu\/research\/Survey-Viva-CalleSJ-Participants-San-Jose-California-2017\">report<\/a>, which included 800+ respondents that compared non-players and players). Across the six months of data collection, <strong>interviews<\/strong> with program staff and <strong>partners<\/strong> were particularly important, since the researcher&#8217;s primary emphasis was on how cities positioned and remixed the game to advance their goals; these ranged from the Niantic CEO and Vice Presidents at the Knight Foundation, to local staff and the businesses and organizations that partnered in each city.<\/p>\n<h2>Acknowledgements<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thank you<strong>,<\/strong> in particular, to Yennie Fuller, Lilian Coral, Sam Gill, Vikram Grover and Lucas Hernandez; this report only happened because of the doors they opened and the collaborative spirit they maintained.
